Surface Grinder
A surface grinder is responsible for precision grinding of metal components used in tool and die manufacturing. The role involves operating surface grinding machines to achieve high tolerances, smooth finishes, and exact dimensions for tooling and die components. The operator must have a keen eye for detail, strong knowledge of grinding techniques, and experience working with hardened tool steels and other materials.
Responsibilities

Set up, operate, and maintain manual and CNC surface grinding machines to grind and finish tool and die components.

Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work orders to determine grinding specifications.

Select, install, and dress appropriate grinding wheels based on material type and finish requirements.

Adjust machine speeds, feeds, and depth of cut to achieve optimal results.

Inspect finished workpieces using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and height gauges to ensure adherence to tight tolerances.

Work with tool steels, carbide, and other metals commonly used in tool and die making.

Maintain high-quality surface finishes and ensure dimensional accuracy per engineering specifications.

Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on grinding machines.

Collaborate with toolmakers, machinists, and engineers to improve processes and ensure precision tooling.

Identify and correct grinding defects, burns, or irregularities.

Adhere to workplace safety regulations and maintain a clean, organized work area.
Qualifications and Skills

High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or apprenticeship in machining or tool & die preferred.

Minimum of 2–5 years of experience in surface grinding within a tool and die or precision machining environment.

Strong understanding of grinding processes, wheel selection, and metal properties.

Proficiency in reading blueprints and engineering drawings.

Hands-on experience using precision measuring instruments to verify dimensions and tolerances.

Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work independently and collaborate with a team.

Physical stamina to stand for long periods and handle heavy tooling components.

Experience with CNC grinding operations is a plus.
