Brake Press Operator
A Brake Press Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining a brake press machine to bend and shape metal sheets or plates according to specified dimensions and angles. They play a critical role in the metal fabrication process, ensuring accurate and precise bending operations to create various metal components and structures.
Responsibilities
Machine Setup and Preparation:
-
Review work orders, blueprints, or job specifications to understand bending requirements.
-
Select the appropriate tooling, dies, and backstops for the brake press machine based on the material type, thickness, and desired bend angles.
-
Set up the machine by installing and aligning the tooling and ensuring proper clearance for the workpiece.
-
Adjust machine settings, such as stroke length, ram speed, and backgauge position, to achieve the desired bending results.
Bending Operations:
-
Load the metal sheet or plate onto the brake press machine, ensuring proper alignment and clamping.
-
Input bending programs or adjust machine controls to specify the bending angle, bend length, and number of bends required.
-
Operate the brake press machine to perform bending operations, using foot pedals, control panels, or computerized controls.
-
Monitor the bending process to ensure accurate and consistent bends, making adjustments as necessary.
Quality Control and Inspection:
-
Perform regular quality checks to ensure the accuracy, precision, and quality of bent components.
-
Conduct dimensional measurements, angle checks, or visual inspections to identify any defects, deviations, or non-conformities.
-
Make adjustments to machine settings, tooling, or setup as needed to correct any discrepancies.
Safety and Compliance:
-
Adhere to safety protocols and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during all machine operations.
-
Follow machine-specific safety guidelines and standard operating procedures.
-
Participate in safety training programs and contribute to maintaining a safe working environment.
Qualifications and Skills
-
Experience in operating brake press machines or similar sheet metal bending equipment.
-
Knowledge of brake press setup, tooling selection, and machine programming.
-
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, or bending specifications.
-
Attention to detail and the ability to produce high-quality bends within specified tolerances.
-
Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
-
Understanding of safety procedures and practices in a fabrication environment
