How to Get the Most out of Your Recruiter: Hint - It’s All About Relationship!

You know the scene. You’ve hit the “Done Button” at your current job and are ready to start the hunt for a new one. However, you’ve done that before, too. While “finding a new job” sounds great in theory, the effort of hunting, applying, and interviewing for just the right fit is a mental, pick-and-shovel grind.

And that is where working with a recruiter comes in for the win.

Recruiters work in staffing agencies and recruitment agencies, or sometimes independently. Companies hire recruiters, delegating to them the task of attracting qualified candidates to open positions in their organization. (That means recruiters are looking for YOU.) Recruiters have their finger on the pulse of the job scene, actively matching candidates to their ideal positions and seeking the best fit for both the company and the candidate. By partnering with a recruiter, you have an “in” to the best jobs as they become available. A good recruiter has your best interest at heart and develops a keen insight into your skill set and career goals.

But a good relationship with your recruiter doesn’t just happen overnight. It’s a two-way street, requiring you to put in some solid effort. Here are some tips for getting the most out of your relationship with your recruiter.

Build a Relationship

Establish a personal connection and build rapport with your recruiter. Take time to get to know them! Not only does this give you peace of mind as you develop trust, but it also helps the recruiter better understand what kind of work environment you need to flourish. It’s also an investment for the future! A genuine relationship with a quality recruiter could follow you throughout your career, keeping you informed and relevant as you climb the ladder.

Put Your Best Face Forward

While creating an authentic relationship with your recruiter is ideal, you must keep it polished and professional. Put your best face forward and treat them as if they were your potential employer. It allows them to see how you would interact with an employer, giving them insight into what kind of work environment suits you best. Remember — companies have hired them to recruit specific people and talent. They are thinking about what the employer is looking for, too.

Be Transparent

There’s no need to hide your goals or exaggerate your dreams with your recruiter. To do their job properly, they need your transparency and honesty. It’s also essential to keep them up to date. Let them know where you’ve previously applied, what companies you’ve been eyeballing, and companies you have interviewed with already. Transparency spares everyone the awkwardness of them trying to connect you with someone you’ve already contacted.

Ask for Feedback - (And Take Their Advice)

Recruiters are more than job-to-talent matchmakers. They are there to advise you as you search for a new job. Ask for their feedback on your goals, career growth strategies, resume, and interview skills. Don’t be nonchalant and disregard their input. When you ask for their feedback, applying what they say is crucial. They are there to help, and their experience gives them credibility and real, valuable insight.

Maintain Communication

Even with a recruiter, finding just the right new job might take some time. Consistent, open communication is critical! Keep in touch with your recruiter, connecting with them at least once a week during the job search and even into your interview process. Don’t hesitate to stay in touch with them after you have found a new job. You never know what’s coming down the
