How to Expand and Strengthen Your Network

“It’s not what you know; it’s who you know.”

Knowing the right people has plenty of perks and holds the power to propel you further along in your career path.

That’s why networking is crucial. Networking helps you:

  • Pave the way for new job opportunities
  • Develop new skill sets
  • Increase learning opportunities
  • Discover changes in your industry
  • Open up a broader customer base through referrals
  • Give back through community and charity events

However, knowing the right people doesn’t happen overnight. Building a network of helpful connections and authentic relationships takes time, effort, and some strategic savvy. Some find networking easy; establishing solid and authentic business relationships comes naturally. (Oh! Hello, extroverts!) Some find it more challenging; the thought of small talk over a Chamber luncheon sounds dreadful. (We see you, too, introverts!)

Either way, networking is a skill set all its own. Effective networking takes planning, discernment, and sincerity. Networking isn’t just about receiving; it’s also about giving back and helping others grow.

Here are some tips to help you expand and strengthen your network:

Establish Goals; Create a Plan

Effective networking involves strategy. Take some time and consider your goals. Are you looking for increased knowledge and skills within the industry? Want to build a business-to-business referral network or business partnerships? Are you keeping your ear to the ground for new opportunities? Either way, when it comes to networking, consistency is the key.

Goals help you be more discerning. Countless networking spaces, platforms, and circles exist. Additionally, the more involved you become in an industry and community, the more networking opportunities present. So, planning around your goals for relevance and more effective time management is essential.

Don’t Forget Current Connections

Don’t forget about all of your existing relationships. Childhood friends, family members, classmates, previous coworkers, and current colleagues are a great place to start. Perhaps they can help you achieve your goals or give you a warm introduction to someone who can. Regardless, it never hurts to reach out to an old colleague or friend, see how they’re doing, and if there’s a way you can help them, too.

Start Reaching Out

Effective networking takes willingness and the gumption to reach out first. Starting a conversation can be as simple as saying, “Hi.” Developing a comfortable way of introducing yourself is helpful.

Make sure you include:

  • Who you are
  • What you do
  • What you want to learn more about
  • The value you bring to the table
  • Suggestions for moving forward

Business mixers and networking events are back on the rise, and you should take advantage of them. Identify thought leaders, influencers, those who are well connected, or whom you want to emulate. Pay attention to their communities and collaborations, and start moving in those circles.

Initiate a mutually beneficial “power team” of professionals in compatible industries; spend time together discussing ways you can collaborate or pass referrals to one another.

Join a Cause

Participating in a cause you care about is a fantastic way to combine networking with giving back. Volunteer opportunities, charities, and non-profit organizations are full of wonderful people passionate about the same things you are. It is personally enriching and allows you to develop a reputation for something you care about –not just where you work.

Be Proactive Online

Do not neglect online spaces. Your online profiles must remain updated and current. Stay relevant on social media by posting and engaging with followers. Be proactive on platforms like LinkedIn by sending messages to potential connections. Keep your initial messages succinct, briefly outlining your “elevator pitch.” It might be helpful to set some time aside each day to network online.

Partnering with a staffing agency is another way to propel your career forward. Networking is all about connecting with the right people, and here at Career Concepts, we’ve been matching the right people to the right jobs for over 50 years! Contact us today, and let’s get started!
