How to Deal with Adversity in the Workplace

We all face adversity in the workplace at one time or another. Workplace adversity can take many forms. And, whatever form it takes, it can severely hinder output, relationships, and morale.

Fortunately, there are strategies that can help you overcome challenging situations and transform them into resilience and renewed productivity. Below are some helpful steps you can take to address adversity at work.

Deal With Your Immediate Reaction

Take a few minutes to write down how you feel about the current problem or, if necessary, vent privately to a friend or family member. Getting the issue out of your head will create distance and allow you to take an analytical view. Once you feel calmer, you can then decide what to do.

Seek Help

Depending on the situation, you might need to talk to your manager or supervisor. Your co-workers can also assist you in projects that are overwhelming you. Ask for assistance when necessary and be there for them in return when they need it. Building positive relationships and practicing clear communication can help you overcome adversity.

Find Inspiration

Perhaps you know someone at your office who handles conflict and stress well; you may try asking them for advice. Consider joining a support group: getting insight from someone who's been through what you're currently facing can be invaluable! Listening to a podcast by someone who has overcome obstacles can help you consider how to adapt their strategies in overcoming adversity in your situation. You might also consider investing in a coach who can provide personalized support.

Come Up With An Action Plan

Think about what you'd like your job or business to look like on the other side of the obstacle. Consider what you can do in the next week to move in that direction. Break down your goals into manageable steps. Try different strategies and evaluate their results to determine what works best. Prepare for multiple outcomes and create an action plan for the best (and worst-case) scenarios. Identify where problems arose and brainstorm ways how to avoid those problems again if a similar occasion arises.

Concentrate On What You Can Control

We might not always be able to change your situation, but we can control our response to a situation. There are a variety of mindset shifts and mental and emotional practices that can help you take control of your reactions, such as:

  • Choosing optimism. Try reframing negative language with positive self-talk. How you talk or think about a situation can affect how you feel about it!
  • Expressing gratitude. Being thankful for your support system and how the current issue has allowed you to grow or can increase your positivity.
  • Cultivating a sense of humor. Taking a step back and looking at a situation from a different viewpoint might help you see the funny side. Levity can alleviate tension and give you a fresh perspective.
  • Practicing patience. Realizing that most situations we find ourselves in are temporary allows us to cultivate patience. Practicing patience will help us become more resilient when facing challenges.
  • Embracing responsibility. Taking responsibility for one's role in a challenging situation is the first step towards resolution during adversity.
  • Celebrating small victories. Remember, even if you develop a solution that improves the situation by just 10 percent, you are still making progress!
  • Concentrating on growth. Continuously working on personal and professional development will expand your knowledge and critical-thinking skills, which will, in turn, help you navigate future adversity with confidence. Embracing a mindset of continuous education will help you expand your capacity for adversity.
  • Staying disciplined. Persistence is key to overcoming adversity. Establishing positive habits and routines above will help you navigate challenging times more effectively.

Adversity is a part of life and can manifest itself in many ways in the workplace. However, with the right toolkit and mindset, you can transform challenges into enhanced flexibility, innovation, and strengthened relationships. By integrating the strategies above, you can turn any adversity into a catalyst for growth and success!
