8 Ways to Show Your Boss that You’re Ready for a Promotion

If you’ve been at the same job for some time, it’s easy to assume that a promotion will come along, but you must do more than simply log hours to make it to the next level in today’s workforce!

Fortunately, there are strategies you can implement to signal to your manager that you are the best choice for a promotion. Read on for eight action steps to help you become the front-runner for that new job opening!

1. Work on the Presentation

How you present yourself plays a critical role in the promotion process. Presenting yourself in the most attractive light possible could include:

  • Having a good attitude: Most bosses would rather hire someone upbeat and willing than someone who puts in good work but has a bad attitude. You can coach a skill, but it’s very hard to change an attitude!
  • Communicating effectively: Listen actively and be clear and concise when you are speaking—and don’t forget that posture and facial expressions are important nonverbal factors when you’re communicating!
  • Dressing well: If you always show up to work clean and well-dressed, people will assume you put the same thought and polish into your work. Dressing well will also do wonders for your confidence—an attribute which also catches the attention of management!
  • Being helpful: Being a helpful, amiable person can mean the difference between career advancement and stagnation. Build a positive reputation by helping others achieve their goals and become more appreciated and respected by your coworkers while simultaneously boosting your credentials!
  • Focus on relationships: Fostering and maintaining positive relationships in the workplace can be a great way to become a recognized and reliable linchpin between people, culture, and projects.

2. Tell Your Boss You Want a Promotion

This is not the same as asking for a specific promotion; this is simply letting your boss know you want to progress and grow within the team or company. Do this before any job opening occurs, so your boss can observe you in action in your current role and see your motivation and value!

3. Take Initiative

If an issue arises, don’t be the one who always has to have someone else tell you what to do. Start learning to identify issues and solve them proactively. When executives are looking to promote people, they look for problem solvers!

4. Be Reliable

Be dependable! Employees who are sloppy, miss deadlines, or are unreliable in their work and communication won’t get promoted.

5. Find A Need and Fill It

Sometimes positions are created to fill new company needs. If you notice a hole in a process or a role that might help your department, suggest to your boss that it’s something you’d like to work on.

6. Learn How to Sell

Even if you aren't in a sales position, every job interview you will ever have will require you to sell yourself as you convince someone why you could bring value to a new role. Take this as a reminder to invest in some training and learn how to pitch yourself correctly!

7. Become A “Go-To” Person

One of the best ways to demonstrate your worth is to become a master at something. Being the “go-to” person for specific knowledge or a particular skill will increase your value to your company tenfold and demonstrate that you can take the lead.

8. Demonstrate You Can Make Good Business Decisions

If you want to be promoted to a leadership position, you’ll need to demonstrate good business decision-making (i.e., the ability to produce quality Return On Investment, or ROI). Some examples of good decision-making using ROI are:

  • Investing in a training course returns a more skilled employee.
  • Investing your time to help a struggling team member deliver a project returns a deeper professional relationship.
  • Investing in productivity improvements returns lower costs.

A promotion may come when you least expect it. Don’t expect immediate results in your efforts to get promoted. Instead, focus on becoming a more well-rounded professional. Stick with it, and you will be destined for great things!
